Rolex Square 'Perpetual' Dress Watch - Satin Silver Dial
Prior to becoming perhaps the most powerful, well-known watch brand on the planet, Rolex was just like any other small manufacturer in the first half of the twentieth century. Before major model families came into their own, such as the Datejust, Day-Date, and the entirety of the Professional range, they were constantly experimenting trying new things to see what stuck.
The piece that we have here, a dress watch dating to circa the 1950s, is a very unusual 'Perpetual' model. As its name suggests, it utilizes an automatic-winding movement within a square case — typically reserved for the 'Precision' family of watches with manual-winding Calibres.
The 18k yellow gold case measures 30mm x 30mm with a flat crown at 3 o'clock, beveled lugs, and a snapback caseback. It also have a very attractive 'engine-turned' top-case which retains nice finishing. The dial inside is silver with a satin surface and very nicely preserved. It features applied 'stick' indices which show an attractive 'rosy' oxidation from age, printed 'Roman' indices at the 3, 6, 9, & 12 o'clock positions and an outer minute track, and a blued-steel 'feuille' handset to tie it all together.
This then, is a brilliant example of Rolex displaying a more artistic side, all while very much being a Rolex at heart with that automatic-winding movement. Calling this piece rare would be a brutal understatement... this will likely be the last chance to grab one of these for quite some time.
