Rolex Oyster Precision Ref. 6425 - 'Jumbo' W/ 'Concentric' Dial
If you boil Rolex down to its purest form, what do you get?
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual. This is truly the genesis for the entire Rolex brand. The very first Rolex models were called ‘Oysters’ which was owed to their innovative three part case that all screwed into each-other. That is where the fluted bezel actually derives from, being screwed down into the top of the case to secure the crystal with a gasket - as well as the grooves on the oyster case back. All makes sense now - right?
The piece that we have here, an Oyster Precision, is a descendant of those early watches, utilizing a water-resistant Oyster case, a manually-wound movement, and nothing else. No frills — purely a functional timekeeping device.
This example of a Reference 6425 dates to circa 1965 and contrary to our prior comment about being a "no frills" watch, it does possess a few very cool features. First, the case is a 'full-size' 36mm similar to that of an Explorer of the period. It has been professionally restored and is in outstanding overall condition, with thick symmetrical lugs and only very light sigs of wear throughout. Second, the silver dial inside has an uncommon 'concentric' finishing, something typically saved for Day-Dates and Datejusts. It shows some light surface oxidation throughout from age, and the applied faceted indices exhibit a similar surface oxidation. The Tritium plots remain show patina from age and some show darkening. Lastly, the hands are a correct, and beautiful 'alpha' set, and the Tritium inside matches the dial very well.
This piece presents great value next to its more well-known siblings, and truly represents the essence of Rolex.
