Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 67514 'Midsize' - Gloss Black 'Explorer' Dial

Sale price$5,350.00 USD

If you boil Rolex down to its purest form, what do you get?

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual. This is truly the genesis for the entire Rolex brand. The very first Rolex models were called ‘Oysters’ which was owed to their innovative three part case that all screwed into each-other. That is where the fluted bezel actually derives from, being screwed down into the top of the case to secure the crystal with a gasket - as well as the grooves on the oyster case back. All makes sense now - right?

The piece that we have here is a descendant of those early watches, though probably not what you first think of when you hear Oyster Perpetual...

This is a 'midsize' Oyster Perpetual Ref. 67514 dating to circa 1991 and in many ways is something of a fusion of a few different Rolex models all rolled into one. The stainless steel case comes in at 31mm in diameter and rather than than a smooth polished steel bezel that you'd expect to find on an Oyster Perpetual, it features a white gold 'fluted' bezel like that of a Datejust. Inside, the gloss black dial prominently features the same style of applied white gold indices with the characteristic 3, 6, & 9.

It remains in very nice, strong overall condition, with a crisp bezel, an excellent case complete with its original caseback sticker, and a seemingly-flawless dial with patinated indices and a matching handset.

Despite being ‘entry-level,' many vintage models from the Oyster family offer a ton of character and remain an overlooked part of the important history of Rolex on their journey to the powerhouse brand that they are today.

The details on this example amount to a very unique piece that, frankly, we didn't even know existed, but are chuffed to now know about.
