Rolex Datejust Ref. 1603 'John Bull' - Sunburst Blue 'Sigma' Dial Unpolished

Sale price$8,950.00 USD

Hard to believe - but the Datejust has been around since 1945. It is far older than its bigger and attention-hogging Submariner brethren. The Datejust was Rolex’s idea of the perfect everyday watch. The robustness of the Oyster case, combined with the elegance of an Oyster Perpetual. The ‘4 digit’ series of Datejust are particularly attractive for their pie-pan dials which offer a layer of three-dimensionality to the dials that went away with the advent of quickset date and 5-digit Datejusts. These early Datejusts were available as the 1601, with a fluted white gold bezel, or the 1603, with an engine-turned steel bezel. The 4-Digit Datejusts were also the first series to become available with a myriad of dial colors and case and bracelet materials.

This particular piece, a Reference 1603, dates to circa 1977 and as you may have noticed, stands out amongst its contemporaries with a standout 'special' finishing. Known as 'John Bull,' this piece's namesake is derived from a dealer that, with the approval of Rolex, has had certain models over the years treated with a special 'bark'-like finishing.

This is one of those watches.

It remains in excellent overall condition, with thick and symmetrical case proportions, strong finishing throughout, and a correct engine-turned steel bezel. The matching 'oval-link' Jubilee bracelet with a blade clasp possesses the very same finishing on the outer links and remains in matching condition. Inside, the sunburst blue 'Sigma' dial shows some minor wear around the edge of the pie-pan, and presents beautifully with crisp sunburst finishing and a vibrant blue color throughout.

All things considered, this is tough to beat. Like virtually all 36mm 4-digit Rolex, this could easily be your one vintage watch, or make for a fantastic addition to a growing collection.
