Rolex Datejust Ref. 16014 - Grey 'Tapestry' Dial W/ Box & Papers

Sale price$7,500.00 USD

Hard to believe - but the Datejust has been around since 1945. It is far older than its bigger and attention-hogging Submariner brethren. The Datejust was Rolex’s idea of the perfect everyday watch. The robustness of the Oyster case, combined with the elegance of an Oyster Perpetual. The 4-Digit Datejusts was the first series to become available with a myriad of dial colors and case and bracelet materials — something that has stuck with the Datejust name ever since. What the 4-digits watches do lack, is a quickset date — something that was resolved with the introduction of the 5-digit pieces in the late 1970s.

The piece that we have here, a Reference 16014 dates to circa 1978 and comes to us in fantastic overall condition. The case and matching Jubilee bracelet shows signs of very light previously polished and light signs of wear, with correct finishing present throughout. The characteristic 'fluted' white gold bezel has seemingly been spared of previous polishing and retains excellent definition and matching light wear. The dial within is exceptionally well-preserved and beautiful to behold. The grey surface features a 'tapestry' finishing with white text, applied indices, and gently patinated Tritium plots with a matching handset tying it all together. Of course, this piece also features a handy quickset date function.

Last but not least, this piece comes accompanied by a inner box, outer box with a 16014 reference tag still present, COSC hangtag, and punched papers dating to 1979.

All things considered, this is tough to beat, be it for your one vintage watch, or as an additional to a growing collection. Either way, these don't surface all too often and this is a fantastic example.

From Rolex & Patek Philippe, to Cartier & Audemars Piguet. As collectors first, we love the small details that separate the Submariner from Daytona and Calatrava from Royal Oak. This is why you'll find our curated assortment spans decades of generations of models and brands. We believe that watches don't just tell time, they tell history - and life is too short to wear a boring watch.
