Rolex Antimagnetic Chronograph Ref. 3233 - Silver Patina Dial
The Rolex Daytona has long been one of the most desirable chronographs in production, which is funny for a model that was initially off to a slow sales start!
…but this comes before all of that!
Predating even what are known as ‘Pre-Daytonas' are the non Oyster-style case chronographs. Produced from roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, these chronographs generally utilize a snapback case with a wide variety of lug designs, silver or black dials with numerous handsets, and two-register layouts.
The piece that we have here is simply known as an Antimagnetic Chronograph. It features a 35mm case with 'oval' pushers, a beautiful 'onion' crown, and 'hinged' lugs. Inside, the white dial has developed a very attractive and largely even 'toasted' patina across the satin surface, while retains excellent black printing with a telemetré scale on the outside edge and a black-painted handset. It is powered by a manual-winding chronograph movement with a Rolex-signed bridge.
The 1930s-1950s are an era where Rolex was not yet the big guy on the scene. The brad was still figuring out what works and what would stick, so there is a huge variety of designs to be discovered that can seem almost unique. This piece embodies that belief, and for far, far less than a steel Daytona produced in much greater numbers.
