Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3445G - Patinated Dial
The Patek Philippe Calatrava. Arguably the brands most iconic model line, and purest expression of the brand. Their raison d'etre if you will.
The line has been a hit since its debut in 1932. So much so, that the name "Calatrava" itself has become something of a byword within the watch industry for traditionally styled, no-frills dress watches that simply tell the time. Over the course of its nearly 100-years of production, there have been seemingly countless iterations within the line, with variations in the metal they are made in, with their size, dial configurations, and eventually, complications.
The first waterproof automatic Calatrava was the ref. 2526, which is truly an icon of watchmaking. However, its successor - the 3445 - is actually the younger sibling that was far superior in almost every way to its more famous big brother. In addition to subsidiary seconds register, Patek added a date for the first time to its Calatrava model, while still retaining all the elegance of the 2526. The case is classic mid-century modern, with sharp faceted downturn lugs and a crown that is slightly recessed into the case making for a more streamline shape.
The example that we have here has a beautiful, strong case that has seen a tasteful refurbishing at a previous time, retaining its factory bevels on its thick, symmetrical lugs. It shows light wear and sleeve polish throughout with no major blemishes or damage to speak of. The standout feature here, however, is the sunburst silver dial. It has developed an attractive warm patina throughout and shows no blemishes or impressions. It features applied 'hash' indices for each hour, with black printed markers between them and at the 6 o'clock position for the subsidiary seconds register. The matching framed date window at the 3 o'clock position exhibits a bit of discoloration compared to the rest of the dial, but remains mild. It also features a matching 'pencil' handset and a signed white gold crown.
It is powered by one of Patek's automatic-winding movements, allowing for an easy wearing experience — perfect for daily use. All of this for less than the cost of a new Submariner Date!
How about that!
