Jaeger-LeCoultre Futurematic Ref. E501 - Satin Silver Dial

Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the most well-rounded and storied brands in the history of watchmaking. They are not only known for models, but also, at least in the world vintage watches, equally known for their movements — a surprisingly unique accolade that is perhaps unmatched by any other brand.

Be there no doubt, the most popular and well-known model from the brand is the properly iconic Reverso, but the brand offers so much more with model families like the Memovox, the Deep-Sea, and a wide range of complicated calendar timepieces.

The piece that we have here comes from the Futurematic family of watches; a post-war futuristic line of timepieces that were both technically and aesthetically impressive. These pieces were available with a wide range of metals, case designs, and dial configurations, but all shared the same fundamental movement. More on that later.

This Ref. E501 is probably one of the most well-rounded examples from the range. The stainless steel case is 35mm in diameter and is just flat-out pretty, featuring gently downward curving lugs, a nice crisp polished bezel, and an overall thin design despite the automatic-winding 'bumper' movement inside. The silver dial within is not only an excellent example of mid-century design with its alternating 'dart' and 'Arabic' indices and matching 'dauphine' handset, but also in simply immaculate overall condition. The subsidiary registers retain clear 'concentric' finishing, with a power-reserve indicator on the left and a running seconds indicator on the right.

The Cal. 497 inside is an evolution of their first automatic-winding movement, the Cal. 476 from a few years earlier. In addition to the aforementioned power reserve indicator, it also incorporates a hacking function — something that would not be normalized even twenty or thirty years later. The last and perhaps most noticeable detail about the Cal. 497, is the fact that its fitted to the caseback rather than the usual 3 o'clock position. That, combined with the two-register design makes for an unusually symmetrical design that is not often seen in watches, full stop.

This piece has everything going for it. Outstanding overall condition, historically interesting, technically impressive, and its from one of the great brands.
