Benrus Field Watch & Ultra Deep - CIA-Issued Pair w/ Letter of Provenance
Like a handful of brands that have designed and produced an exceptional model (or product), Benrus is almost exclusively associated with the Type I and Type II models produced in the 1970s for the U.S. Military. Of course, their history runs much deeper, dating back half a century prior to the Type I & II with hundreds of different models produced.
What we have here is a pair of Benrus timepieces, both of which pre-date the Type series and were issued to and worn by the same individual during his service in the CIA.
The first is a DTU- 2A/P field watch dating to circa 1968. Well preserved overall, the 34mm case remains unpolished, with strong and sharp lugs and shows normal wear. The crown is signed and the caseback bears the correct military engravings. The matte black dial inside is equally well-preserved, with excellent patinated indices, printing, and a matching white-painted handset.
The second piece, an Ultra Deep Ref. 6088, dates to circa 1965 and is a very rare model across the board. Also offered in excellent overall condition, the case remains unpolished, with nice symmetrical proportions and clear factory finishing present throughout. The steel 'coin-edge' bezel houses a black acrylic insert with a Tritium indicator, both of which show normal wear. Beneath what is almost certainly the original crystal, the black dial features attractive patinated indices and a matching handset.
Prior to CIA recruitment, James Stanford served as a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. These pieces are offered in as-found condition and were previously sold at Phillips in December of 2019 when they were consigned by his daughter. A letter of provenance is included.
