The Submariner, namely those produced by Rolex, has long been considered the cream of the crop when it comes to watch collecting as a whole. Possibly the most iconic watch ever produced, the Submariner has long standing utilitarian roots that span decades, and everyone who’s anyone has been spotted wearing one. However, if you look deeper into the Submariner line, you may find a lesser known but just as incredible model manufactured by Tudor.

These pieces are not only more unique and uncommon than the traditional Submariner, but offer a more fun, playful design — particularly with the blue-dialed variants...

...And then, there are the Submariners that were issued to a variety of different militaries, with the French 'Marine Nationale' being perhaps the best known to utilize blue-dialed Subs. Additionally, there are many accounts of Tudor Submariners simply being purchased by individuals and then used during their time serving, which is very likely the case of the piece that we have here.

Dating to circa 1968, this Ref. 7016/0 is a fantastic, honest example and a desirable reference on its own. It remains in unpolished condition, with thick lugs and prominent chamfers clearly visible, a fantastic 'fat font' bezel insert, and a desirable matte black 'rose' dial within. The wear present in a few areas on the case hint at the action that this piece likely saw, with some notable scuffs and blemishes scattered throughout. Additionally, there is very little wear on the underside of the lugs, suggesting that the bracelet was removed immediately and was likely always worn on a NATO-style strap. Inside, the black dial shows some patina from age and use, retaining beautiful text and a desirable 'rose' logo that was lost shortly after this time. The Tritium plots exhibit a rich and varying patina and are complimented by a matching handset with a very cool oversized 'lollipop' seconds hand.

We had the honor of purchasing this piece from the widow of the original owner and are thrilled to be able to offer it here on the website for the first time.

This is a real piece of history — a phrase often repeated in the world of watches, though rarely as deservedly as in this case.

To many collectors of vintage, regardless of whether the focus is of military watches or not, this 'Milsub' has everything going for it. Military issued, properly vintage, honest condition, and its a Tudor. What more does one need?

Condition:

Case: Unpolished, retaining thick and symmetrical lugs at all 4 corners and prominent chamfers. Shows heavy signs of wear with scattered blemishes and scuffs throughout and a notable blemish on the lower right lug profile.

Bezel: Unpolished and shows normal wear with crisp finishing. The black 'fat font' insert shows normal wear with a patinated pip.

Dial: Nicely preserved, with a few minor areas of wear or possibly lume drop around the 9:00 marker and on the outside of the 4:00 plot. The Tritium plots exhibit a deep patina with some variance in the color. The handset has aged slightly lighter to the naked eye and matches under UV inspection.

Movement:

Automatic-winding ETA movement modified by Tudor.
