HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock W/ Leather Case & Card
You may have noticed that this is not a watch. So, whats the story here?
This is almost hard to imagine in 2025, but in the 20th century, travel clocks were not uncommon and plenty of familiar manufacturers produced and sold them — Jaeger-LeCoultre, Movado, Cartier, just to name a few. These came in all different shaped and sizes and often featured alarm functions. It was also common to see these with some sort of outer leather sheath or protective shell as a part of the design so that they could be placed in a suitcase and quickly deployed on a nightstand when you arrived at your destination.
The piece that we have here is all of the above, but rather than coming in at forty or fifty years-old, this piece is just a few years old. The well-know — or some would say, best known — online and print watch publication HODINKEE clearly saw the charm and potential with these old travel clocks and in 2020, they released the clock that we have here.
Produced in collaboration with Swiss manufacturer Swiza SA, this is a completely unique design and is constructed beautifully. It is roughly the size of a smaller camera body and even feels like one, coming in at approximately 65mm x 115mm. It is made of PVD-coated steel, which has been wrapped in HODINKEE grey goatskin leather. It features a fold-out cover for the display, which doubles as the stand. Very functional and again, feels robust and constructed to a very high level. Inside, the grey 'gradient' dial is contrasted by white numerals in a rectangular formation, and are what we can understand, a completely new typeface. At the center are luminous hour and minute hands as well as an alarm indicator hand — which also bears a subtle luminous plot on the tip.
Flip the piece over and you'll find the winding mechanisms for both the clock itself and the alarm, the alarm switch, and the setting crowns for both the alarm and time. Inside, the movement has a massive 8-day power reserve.
Included with the clock is the complete set of goodies that it originally came with. A black leather zip-pouch, a setting tool with a matching black leather sheath, and the manual booklet.
Now, hopefully you can see why we couldn't resist the chance to snag this wildly cool throwback to a bygone era.
