Rolex Precision Ref. 9919/8 'Metropolitain' - 'Disco Volante'

Sale price$8,950.00 USD

The 1950s was a decade that Rolex was really coming into their own. The 'Professional' line was almost immediately successful, giving the brand the capital to experiment and expand.

The variety in metals, dials, and handsets in this era, particularly in the Oyster Perpetual, Oyster Precision, Datejust, and Day-Date families of watches was vast. It was also a time where the brand was playing around with manual-winding dress watches, usually denoted with 'Precision' on the dial.

The piece that we have here comes from the 'Precision' family of watches and is better known as a 'Metropolitan.'

It features a completely round 36mm yellow gold case, commonly referred to as a 'UFO' or 'Disco Volante' style case, with beautiful engine-turned finishing, a svelte profile thanks to the manual-winding movement, and a yellow gold crown. Inside, the simple yet captivating champagne dial pops with a 'concentric' finishing and is complimented by a non-luminous 'dauphine' handset.

This then, is a brilliant example of Rolex displaying a more artistic side, all while very much being a Rolex at heart. And with their very low production numbers, this might be the last opportunity to grab one of these for quite some time.
