Rolex Oyster Ref. 6424 - 'Jumbo' Black 'Gilt ' Dial

SOLD

If you boil Rolex down to its purest form, what do you get?

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual. This is truly the genesis for the entire Rolex brand. The very first Rolex models were called ‘Oysters’ which was owed to their innovative three part case that all screwed into each-other. That is where the fluted bezel actually derives from, being screwed down into the top of the case to secure the crystal with a gasket - as well as the grooves on the oyster case back. All makes sense now - right?

The piece that we have here, simply known as an Oyster, is a descendant of those early watches, utilizing a water-resistant Oyster case, a manually-wound movement, and nothing else. No frills — purely a functional timekeeping device.

This Reference 6424 dates to circa 1964 and contrary to our prior comment about being a "no frills" watch, it does possess a few very cool features. First, the case is a 'full-size' 36mm similar to that of an Explorer of the period. Second, the dial within is a coveted black 'gilt' unit. The case remains in strong overall condition, having been lightly previously polished with the correct factory proportions retained. It shows normal signs of wear throughout and the smooth steel bezel matches nicely.

The dial within this piece is the real highlight here. On top of being an uncommon reference to begin with, this example possesses a gloss black 'gilt' dial. Most commonly associated with Rolex's 'Professional' line, gilt dials were difficult to produce and were ultimately discontinued by Rolex in the later half of the 1960s, as they couldn’t be produced in the same quantity as a matte dial. As a result, these have become coveted by collectors. The dial in this piece is beautifully preserved, with its characteristic glossy black surface devoid of any major crazing or damage. The Tritium plots are present in all positions and evenly patinated, and the correct 'Alpha' handset matches perfectly.

This is an exercise in restraint. Perfect for those seeking the legendary build quality of Rolex, but something more understated than a fluted gold bezel. Think of this then like a no-date Datejust. Cool right?

It presents great value next to its more well-known siblings, particularly with a 'gilt' dial like this one, and truly represents the essence of Rolex.
