Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655 - 'Straight Hand' W/ Box & Papers
When is a Rolex GMT not a GMT-Master?
The Rolex Explorer’s core has always been in rugged expedition. While it was originally born out of the Everest celebratory Explorer I - the Explorer II was designed for cave diving. Officially known as spelunking!
The 1655 Explorers were known as ‘Steve McQueen’s' for an alleged relationship with the actor and racer (spoiler: there is no evidence of a connection or that he ever wore one, but the nickname stuck!) and enjoyed a relatively short production run of roughly 13 years. As with nearly all Rolex models during this time, there were numerous changes throughout the production run.
The example that we have here is a 'MK1' variant from circa 1972. The main difference and most obvious between a Mk1 and all other variants, is the 'straight' seconds hand. Like the rest of the 1655 design, it is a very unusual stylistic choice for a Professional model. The matte black dial is in outstanding overall condition, seemingly free of wear or damage and with a light and even patina across the Tritium elements. The handset also matches perfectly, with a vibrant orange 24-hr hand. The case has been lightly previously polished in the past, and done so tastefully, preserving the correct proportions and finishing. The correct 'MK2' bezel shows normal wear and has seemingly been spared any previous polishing. It comes fitted to a correct Oyster bracelet with a blade clasp.
Last but not least, while it would be enough to enjoy this piece on its own, this piece is accompanied by its inner box, COSC hangtag, serialized hangtag, and punched guarantee papers dated 10/12/1972.
All things considered, this is a very strong and compelling example of a very early Explorer II, and easily one of the most whimsical Rolexes every produced.
