Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803 - Champagne 'Linen Sigma' Dial Unpolished

Sale price$16,950.00 USD

When the Day-Date was released in 1956, Rolex had made numerous attempts to capture the market with more complicated timepieces such as the Ref. 6036, the Ref. 8171, and the Ref. 6062, but it seemed like buyers were not particularly fond of complicated Rolexes. All of that changed when President Dwight D. Eisenhower was spotted wearing one Rolex in particular: a Day-Date. The model has since become known worldwide as ‘The President’ and as a symbol of success and prestige. Simply put, this one stuck.

The Day-Date was available for many years on a matching solid gold bracelet (called a 'President' bracelet), but also on a leather strap like the example that we have here.

The piece that we have here, a Reference 1803 from circa 1971, is nothing short of an exceptional example. The case, bracelet, and bezel are all unpolished and beautifully preserved, showing normal signs of wear throughout. Additionally, likely from sitting unworn for many years, the yellow gold components all exhibit an attractive 'rosy' oxidation. This is particularly apparent with an almost 'claw' appearance as a result of the oxidation with fluting on the bezel, as well on the right case profile where the tarnishing is heavier. It doesn't stop there though. Inside, the champagne 'linen' dial remains in immaculate, seemingly flawless condition. The textured surface retains its crisp factory finishing and fully-intact Tritium plots, which exhibit a light and even patina throughout with a matching handset. Last but not least, it comes fitted to it correct yellow gold 'President' bracelet features a blade clasp and the condition matches that of the case perfectly.

This 1803 is nothing short of exceptional. Any watch from this era in condition like this is a treat.... A Day-Date in yellow gold with an interesting dial is a dream.
