Rolex Datejust Ref. 16030 - Tiffany & Co. 'Boiler Guage'
Straight Facts
We will say it again: There are Levels to Watch Collecting.
Hard to believe - but the Datejust has been around since 1945. It is far older than its bigger and attention hogging Submariner brethren. The Datejust was Rolex’s idea of the perfect everyday watch. The robustness of the Oyster case, combined with the elegance of an Oyster Perpetual. While the first series of Datejust’s (known as ‘4-Digits’) featured elegant pie-pan dials, the ‘5-Digits’ got an upgraded movement with a Quickset date Feature. Never underestimate the joy of having a quickset date!
In addition, Rolex unveiled new series of dials to go with the newer models and the present example is one of the collector favorites. The ‘Boiler-Gauge’ dial known for its interior railroad track and small applied Breguet style Arabic numerals is one of the most elegant dials to grace the Datejust lineup. While this style was available in multiple case finishes, the present 16030 is in steel with a beautiful cream dial and tight jubilee bracelet. The dial configuration gives off a very 1980s Patrick Bateman type of vibe.
And onto the best part, the dial itself.
While the overall condition and aging of the dial is very special, the addition of three words elevate the watch to a whole other level of collecting. “Tiffany & Co.” Arguably, there is no more prestigious American retailer than the jeweler occupying the corner of 5th Avenue & 57th Street in New York City and over the years they have stamped their name on only the very best brands. To this day, they continue to be the oldest authorized retailer for Patek Philippe in the world and were until the early 90s a retailer for Rolex. These double-stamped dials are highly sought after and with this one hailing from 1987 makes it one of the last Tiffany & Co. Rolexes to be delivered through the venerable shop.
*Some marks or spots on the dial are reflections or dust on the crystal and are due to high intensity strobe lighting used while photographing. They are not actually on the watch or visible in natural lighting
