Piaget Polo Day Date Ref. 15562 C 701 - Unpolished
Piaget is something of a misunderstood brand. Founded in 1874 by Georges-Édouard Piaget, the company was founded on manufacturing movements — not exactly what we see primarily view the brand as today. Sure, in the 1950s Piaget was at the forefront of ultra-thin movement manufacturing, which continued for decades, but it was the eccentric, beautiful, and intricate designs that came out of the 1970s that Piaget is best known for.
One such model — perhaps the most well known, in fact — is the Polo. Offered in a seemingly endless variety of sizes, metals, and with different movements, it is most likely the integrated-bracelet designs that come to mind when you hear Polo.
The piece that we have here, a Reference 15562 Day Date, is one of those watches. As its name suggests, this model features day and date complications along with a seconds hand that is otherwise absent in the time-only variants. These pieces, along with only a select few others, give new meaning to the term 'integrated.' The tonneau case, bracelet, and even the dial underneath the crystal are all one cohesive design. Constructed out of solid 18k yellow gold, it features horizontally-configured 'slats' with both brushed and polished finishing, minimal dial elements in the form of small applied 'dots' for the minute track, and two apertured for the day and date. In the right light where the crystal can't be seen, it makes for a very cool and unique look. Powering this piece is one of Piaget's quartz calibres.
With the rise in popularity of artistic, design-forward watches in recent years, Piaget too has seen steady rise, and its not hard to see why. The Polo in particular, with its solid precious metal construction and standout design have long been undervalued. If you've been looking for an excellent Polo, here you go!
