Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 565 - Luminous 'Breguet' Dial

Sale price$72,950.00 USD

There are watches - and then there are watches! This is one of the latter.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava Reference 565 is one of the brands most iconic watches from the early half of the 20th Century. It was launched in 1938, and was one of the first Patek models to be offered in a variety of metals, with a variety of dials. That is just one of the 565’s claims to fame. It was also the first Calatrava to have a screw down case back and offer water resistance, making it a more usable watch than its predecessors.

The present Reference 565 uses one of the most desirable dial configurations, with applied Breguet numerals, blue steel radium handset, and sub seconds at the 6 position. Furthermore, the dial still retains its radium lume plots along the enameled outer rail track.

The case is in equally strong condition, and it still has the thick case lines and lugs that we would want in any investment grade vintage watch. While the watch is largely untouched - that is not to say that it is a time-capsule or perfect. Time has taken hold of the watch and gently aged what was once a bright brushed silver dial to an elegant and warmer tone of silver, almost a lighter champagne color. The Radium present in the hands and dial has also aged, taking on a glorious cream/orange color that contrasts beautifully with that darker silver dial and blue steel handset.

Watches like this are what collecting are all about, finding exceptional examples of these early watches in properly untouched and unrestored condition is no small feat. It was very common, and honestly preferred, in the collecting community of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, to seek out restored dials that looked perfect - and polished cases with no scratches. During that wave we saw many of the greatest vintage Pateks be restored by experts in the field OR Patek themselves. Thankfully, the pendulum has swung the other way and there is a true premium for pieces that are in honest, original condition. We are thrilled to offer up this important piece of Patek history.

From Rolex & Patek Philippe, to Cartier & Audemars Piguet. As collectors first, we love the small details that separate the Submariner from Daytona and Calatrava from Royal Oak. This is why you'll find our curated assortment spans decades of generations of models and brands. We believe that watches don't just tell time, they tell history - and life is too short to wear a boring watch.
