IWC Ingenieur Ref. 666 - Sunburst Silver Dial Unpolished
The International Watch Company.
Founded in 1868 in Switzerland by an American, IWC Schaffhausen enjoys a rich history in watchmaking, spanning complicated pocket watches, to pioneering wrist watches made of out experimental materials.
Be there no doubt, the most popular and well-known family of watches from the brand is its 'Pilot' line, which began in the first half of the twentieth century and now offers a simply massive variety of models with different materials, sizes, movements, etc. You name it, they have it. What is slightly lesser-known are models like the Ingenieur. Created in 1954 as IWCs answer to a magnetic-resistant timepiece for, more or less, scientists, it has seen numerous variants over its 70-years of production.
The example that we have here, a Reference 666, is a late example dating to circa 1966. Coming in at a nice and versatilely-sized 35mm in diameter, this example is made out of stainless steel and comes to us in excellent overall condition. Likely spared of any previous polishing, it retails thick, symmetrical lugs at all four corners, and strong finishing. It shows normal signs of wear from age throughout and even retains its signed crown. Inside, the lovely silver dial features a 'sunburst' finishing and lovely black script on both halves of the dial. The applied 'pencil' indices and 'dauphine' handset are also an attractive and very era-appropriate addition. Powering this piece is IWC's own Calibre 853 automatic-winding movement.
While by no means a forgotten family of watches, the Ingenieur is a historically significant gem from IWCs history that with the latest version released in 2023, might just be their most in-demand piece.
This model also enjoys a very special place in our history here at Oliver & Clarke, having been one of the very first pieces owned by our founder in his personal collection.
