Heuer Autavia Ref. 113.603 - Black PVD 'IDF' Issued
While the Carrera gets all the attention, the Heuer Autavia is actually the ‘OG’ Heuer. A combination of ‘Automotive’ and ‘Aviation’ - the Autavia line originally started as dash mounted rally timers made for motorsport and aviation applications. It was not until the early 1960s that first Autavia wrist chronographs came around. The first generation Autvaia, the Reference 2446, utilized screw-back cases and the venerable Valjoux 72 manual-winding movements, while the second generation case with used a snap-back case or ‘Compressor’ Case - hence the model shift to 2446C.
The piece that we have here is a ‘cushion case’ Autavia, which was the first to get Heuer’s Cal 11 automatic winding chronograph movement. When you think of an Autavia, theres a good chance that this is what comes to mind.
That said, you may have noticed that this particular Autavia is completely back in color. In fact, it was produced for the Israeli Defence Forces. Flip it over to revel the caseback engraved with "M-1841" — a clear indication of its military provenance.
Dating to circa the late 1970s - early 1980s, this Ref. 113.603 is offered in strong overall condition given the life that it was intended. The black PVD coating remains largely present, with only minimal loss throughout. Even the 'fluted' chronograph pushers, signed crown and bezel assembly shows only light wear from age and use. Inside, the dial also is very well preserved, with a stealthy black surface and contrasting grey subsidiary registers with 'concentric' finishing. The applied indices are painted white and Tritium-filled, which is mirrored in the matching handset. Of course, this piece is powered by the legendary Cal. 12 movement.
Not only is this a piece of history, but when compared to other military-issued pieces from other brands, this is fantastic value with almost no premium over 'civilian' Autavias from this era...
...and they sure don't grow on trees.
