Breguet Empire Guilloche - Trophée Hassan II PGA Presentation Watch

SOLD

Straight Facts

Buckle Up, this is about to get historical.

King Hassan II of Morocco, ever hear of him? He reigned from 1961 to 1999 and was a pretty fascinating individual. He survived at least two assassination attempts, one coup d’etat, and is described in his Moroccan State Supplied biography as “fluent in Arabic, French” and spoke “capable English”.

In addition, he was a tremendous lover of golf, and desired to open Morocco up onto the international stage for tourism - which coincided in 1971 with the first-ever Moroccan Open, hosted by the PGA. The first ever outing was won by American Orville Moody, an extremely accomplished golfer who was the last golfer to work his way up the PGA qualifying ladder to win a US Open Championship.

As a prize for those who competed in the first ever Moroccan Grand Prix (now named the Trophée Hassan) - King Hassan II gifted players an equally Royal watch - a Breguet Empire Guilloche with an engraved caseback to commemorate the first ever Grand Prix Morocco Tour.

While any vintage Breguet wristwatch is a true rarity, with only a few hundred pieces before their eventual Swiss acquisition made. The provenance of this piece sets it apart. The Breguet Guilloche quality is truly the pinnacle of design, and ultimate calling card of the brand. This design is known as the “Empire” and first appeared in the 1950’s. Our present example is in truly exceptional shape with an unpolished case, guilloche dial and even its original yellow gold buckle.

*Some marks or spots on the dial are reflections or dust on the crystal and are due to high intensity strobe lighting used while photographing. They are not actually on the watch or visible in natural lighting.
