They are not only known for models, but also, at least in the world vintage watches, equally known for their movements — a surprisingly unique accolade that is perhaps unmatched by any other brand.

The most popular and well-known model from the brand is without a doubt the properly iconic Reverso.

Often viewed as one of watchmaking's great Art Deco dress watches, its origins are far more practical. In fact, the model was conceived not for the drawing room, but for the polo field. During a trip to India in the late 1920s, Swiss businessman César de Trey encountered a British polo player frustrated after cracking the crystal of his watch during a match. The problem lingered with de Trey long after he returned to Switzerland, eventually leading to a discussion with Jacques-David LeCoultre that posed a simple question: what if a watch case could be turned around to protect itself?

The solution was as elegant as it was ingenious. By allowing the case to slide and reverse within its carrier, the vulnerable dial and crystal could be hidden away behind a solid metal back whenever play began. For polo players, it meant no more shattered crystals or damaged dials from the inevitable knocks and impacts endured during gameplay. The design was patented in March of 1931, and quickly made the Reverso of the most distinctive watch cases ever to be produced.

The example that we have here, a modern offering dating to circa the 2000s, is a no-frills take on that classic design, utilizing a beautifully-sized 23mm x 38.5mm reversible case made from stainless steel, a crown at the 3 o'clock position, and a timeless, multi-tone silver 'Art-Deco' dial with a blued-steel 'sword' handset within.

For an icon like this, these quartz pieces make for both a fantastic grab-and-go dress watch, or a versatile daily driver and are something of a bargain for nearly any wrist.

https://oliverandclarke.com/products/jaeger-lecoultre-reverso-classique-ref-250-8-08-multi-tone-silver-dial
